BranchCache versions

Hello all,

As I understand it,
  • Server 2008 + W7 = V1 BranchCache
  • Server 2012 + W8 = V2 BranchCache.  Paying specific attention to the following new features of V2....
    • Duplicate content is stored once and downloaded once (most importantly...we can benefit from only the Delta portion of the content downloading)
    • "Intelligent" Hashing
    • Easier configuration
  1. Our environment is Server 2012 + W7 and unfortunately I am guessing that means we will not be able to benefit from the new features of BranchCache Version 2.  Can anyone confirm this please?
  2. Any chance anyone is aware of a Desktop OS hotfix which would upgrade Win7 to be BranchCache V2 capable?
  3. Has anyone implemented BranchCache with this configuration?
  4. Any concerns/gotchas I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance

we have not moved to Server 2012 / Win7... but Server 2008 / Win7 works awesome...  we use "distributed" branch cache with no issues.

    Thanks for the feedback :)

I am really looking forward to the ability of downloading only the Delta's in an updated package when we can get to V2.  Unfortunately I don't see full Win8 rollout soon enough.  Multiple 200MB regional packages get updated to their respective regions once per week and all packages (approx 2GB) updated to all regions once per month.

No financial appetite for 3rd party tools to get it right now....sigh :).

    Have a gr8 week!

File Locking? The BranchCache feature works on a network level, i.e. you dont really have the "file" cached, just the data. Makes sense? If not, clarify and I will explain.

Darren; Even Windows 7 can handle some of the delta changes, it just depends on how the file is constructed. Things like .wim works perfectly as all changes are towards the end of the file. Check this and other answers on our site, there is a huge BranchCache FAQ building there:
