These are the books I use and recommend.

    Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide
    by Microsoft Corporation
    ISBN: 0735618674
NOTES: This is a very comprehensive book that applies to Windows 2000 and above. Most everything works with WinNT 4 as well.

Microsoft Windows Scripting Self-Paced Learning Guide
    by Ed Wilson (Microsoft Press)
    ISBN: 0735619816
NOTES: This is a good learning reference, but it does focus on Windows XP & Windows Server 2003. There are a few things that are not backward compatible.

Managing Windows With Vbscript and WMI
    by Don Jones
    ISBN: 0321213343
NOTES: Pretty basic reference that covers using VBScript to interface with WMI. Not overly complicated for the beginner, might be a little simple for the experieced VBScripter.

I know you were asking about books, but go to http://www.microsoft.com/seminar/events/webcasts/default.mspx and browse and search for webcasts on scripting. They have quite a few in their archive. They are very good, and even entertaining.

Of course I don't know why you need vbscript, could be you must support some previous work... so take this with a grain of salt - but I would drop vbscript in favor of powershell.  I've developed in vbscript before and powershell is by far the best way to go.  There is a bit more work necessary for powershell such as a GPO and script signing to distribute scripts to other systems and some objects may still be easier to script in vbscript (but quickly changing as more examples come up on the web and version 2 is released this fall).  But once you're into it, you'll see how much more powerful it is (provides access to .NET 2.0) and it's becoming the standard management interface for new Microsoft products...

I agree with all the above, but I would just wrap it up and put a bow on it: Google

I wrote an exhaustive reference book on VBScript to replace the MS documentation that you might find helpful. EVERYTHING explained with real world and practical admin oriented examples.

WSH and VBScript Core: TFM (SAPIEN Press)
